As we wrap up our 2021 seasons and head into the offseason, the end of the year brings families, friends and coworkers together for the upcoming holidays. With these gatherings over the next few months, there will be an abundance of food and treats to enjoy. You might find yourself wondering what your game plan will be when it comes to finding balance with holiday food.
As time-crunched athletes, we strive for balance in life and that is no exception when it comes to food during the holidays. So what exactly does balance with holiday food look like? What will your mindset be? And will holiday foods impact your training?
In my opinion, as a triathlon coach, this is not a time to worry or feel guilty about eating habits, but instead, it’s a time to enjoy your loved ones and the seasonal food.
Here Are Some Tips to Find Balance With Holiday Foods:
1. The holidays bring an opportunity to enjoy foods you normally wouldn’t enjoy, some of which can be classified as less healthy. One option to help balance this by choosing healthier options when and if you are cooking at home. For example, you can substitute olive oil instead of butter, whole grain instead of white bread, leaner proteins instead of fattier proteins. These are only some healthy swaps, a quick Google will bring you tons of options to make your holiday favourites a little healthier.
2. When and if you are eating elsewhere, build a balanced plate with the typical portions of protein, carb and veggies, just as you would on a normal day. Consuming protein first will help to prevent glucose spikes and curb your hunger.
3. Do not skip meals in preparation for a large holiday meal. This will prevent ravenous hunger and over-indulgence.
4. Eating intuitively! This means eating until you feel satisfied, rather than completely stuffed. This involves self-assessing your hunger levels throughout the meal and the day.
5. When it comes to desserts, indulge in moderation. Feel free to have a slice of pie without feeling guilty.
The biggest takeaway to enjoying the holiday season and finding balance with holiday food is to be mindful and remember that you’re already so skilled at balancing your busy life with triathlon training. If you can find balance in that, you can surely find balance when it comes to enjoying all of your favorite holiday treats!
Have a healthy and happy holiday season!
